There are many ways to travel in Japan, but sometimes the journey itself becomes the highlight of the trip. This time, instead of taking a regular train, I decided to try something different: a luxury experience on the Saphir Odoriko, heading from Tokyo to Izu Shimoda.

This vlog was filmed in May, a perfect season for travel. The weather is comfortable, the skies are clear, and the coastal scenery looks especially vibrant. Starting from Tokyo Station, I spent some time walking around while waiting for my train.

Boarding the Saphir Odoriko

The Saphir Odoriko is not just a train. It is designed to give you a premium travel experience with a more refined and luxurious atmosphere than regular Odoriko services.

I purchased my ticket online, received a confirmation email with a QR code, and printed the ticket quickly at the station machine. The process was smooth and stress-free.

Interestingly, the ticket comes in two parts because it includes both the limited express fare and the local JR connection to Tokyo Station.

First Impressions: A Moving Lounge

Once onboard, it immediately felt different from a normal train. The seats are large and comfortable, with a design that feels closer to a moving lounge than ordinary rail seating.

The Premium Green seats in Car No.1 were already sold out when I booked, but I still secured a window seat, which is one of the best choices for this route.

The Journey Begins

The journey to Izukyu-Shimoda Station takes around two and a half hours. As the train leaves Tokyo, dense city views gradually shift into smaller towns, open landscapes, and beautiful coastline scenery.

One of the highlights is the Pacific Ocean view. You can adjust your seat to focus on the passing scenery or recline for a more relaxed ride.

The train also offers clean restrooms, onboard snacks, and a restaurant with drinks and meal options.

Ito or Shimoda?

Many passengers get off at Ito Station, a popular destination with beaches and hot springs. The fare difference is noticeable, so some travelers stop there and continue by rental car to explore nearby attractions.

This time, I continued all the way to Shimoda at the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula.

Arriving in Shimoda: A Different World

Shimoda feels completely different from Tokyo. The pace is slower, the streets are quieter, and there are fewer crowds. Walking through town has a calm and peaceful feeling.

The streets had both Japanese and U.S. flags, creating a unique atmosphere that stands out from other towns.

Heading to the Perry Monument

My main goal was to visit the Matthew Perry monument area. I took a bus for part of the route, but the distance is also walkable from around the station area.

Along the way, I saw references to the Black Ships, a familiar topic from Japanese school history.

A Quiet, Photogenic Harbor

Near the monument, I found a peaceful harbor with benches, parked boats, and a calm coastal view. As the light changed toward evening, the water and yachts reflected warm golden tones.

It was one of those simple but memorable moments where the atmosphere itself becomes the highlight.

Heading Back to Tokyo

Before sunset, I decided to head back to Tokyo. It is important to check train types and schedules in advance: Saphir Odoriko and regular Odoriko have different departure times.

In my opinion, daytime departures are best because the route's main charm is the scenery, especially around sunset.

Final Thoughts

This trip was not only about the destination. From Tokyo Station to the luxurious ride and finally Shimoda's quiet coastal streets, each step offered a different mood.

If you are looking for travel that combines scenery, comfort, and a touch of history, this journey is definitely worth considering.

Thank you for watching, and I hope you enjoy more travel stories from Japan.
